League action returns as Athletic welcome Aberford Albion to The Ings for tomorrows game. The match has a 2pm kick-off time and looking at the weather, it should be a cloudy day with the occasional burst of sunshine!
The last few weeks have seen Wetherby participate in several cups with varying degrees of success. Manager Martin Powell will be hoping that a return to the bread and butter regime of the league will bring a more constant set of displays from the team and the chance to push back up the table.
Looking at the form guide heading into this match, we can see that it is us who hold the advantage coming into this game:
Our opponents currently reside in 9th place and are adrift from us by four points. On the road, they are a potent team having only lost once out of the five games that they have played. Their best result, so far, has been a 10-2 hammering of Howden Clough, which they achieved in August. This massive scoreline has helped to them scoring an impressive 22 times away from home (avg. 4.4 goals per game) whilst conceding 11 (avg. 2.2 goals per game). This figure of 22 is the highest in the league and Athletic will have to be wary of this.
The two teams have already met this season and a goal by Jamie Gillies was enough to grab al the points as Athletic left Aberford with a 1-0 to end a run of three defeats (see match report here).
A win for us could see us jump above East End Park into 6th place. A defeat could see us drop a place if Rothwell get a result in their game.
Looking at the Wetherby Athletic AFC database, it shows that the two teams have met at least 17 times with the honours going 10:7 in Athletic’s favour. Goals wise, we have hit 37 whilst conceding 30. The best result we have achieved against them was a 5-0 win in the Barkston Ash FA Cup back in 2015.
The management will be hoping to have a good-sized squad available for this day and will be looking to field a very strong team against, what will be a very tough opponent.
The referee for this game will be Mr Brian Knaggs. This will be Mr Knaggs’s first game in charge of us and we wish him a pleasant time whilst he is with us.
We are hoping to have another superb meat pack from our Associate Sponsors Andrews Traditional Butchers of Wetherby to raffle off after the game. Tickets will be available at the bar to purchase.
Following the game, please come and enjoy happy hour between 4-6pm at the Wetherby Sports Association bar. Draught products will be sold at a great price – all for your enjoyment!
