REPORT: Wetherby Athletic Res 3 v 0 Kirk Deighton Rangers Reservers
Tangerines Do The Double Over Rangers In Thrilling Match!
In a superb game of football that both teams certainly played their part in, Wetherby Athletic Reserves and leaders Kirk Deighton Rangers Reserves produced some quality of football that was an excellent advert for the West Yorkshire Alliance football. In the end Wetherby celebrated doing the double over Rangers, becoming the only team to have done so this season!
Straight from the off, Athletics’ game plan was to attack, and they took the game to the visitors, however Rangers proved why they were the team at the top of the division and produced some quality blocks and tackles.
A through ball by Player-Manager Chris Plews allowed Sam Straker to use his speed and managing to find a bit of space from the close attentions of the visitor’s backline, he produced a wonderful left foot finish to put Athletic ahead after 17 minutes.
Rangers responded to the goal and it was the defence of Wetherby who had to soak up pressure for a little while as our neighbours looked for the equaliser.
As the game progressed, one area that the Tangerines excelled in was the battle for midfield, powered by Joe Straker, Sam Straker and Rob Caulton, Wetherby were winning every ball that came their way and forcing Rangers to rely on counter attacks.
With 65 minutes on the clock, Athletic finally managed to double their advantage to put the leaders well and truly on the back-foot. Using his experience well, Plews swung in a teasing cross that the Ranger’s keeper couldn’t collect cleanly and he spilt the ball at Tom Warrington’s feet and the young winger duly converted the presented opportunity.
The final goal for Wetherby arrived in the 80th minute when another flowing move by the home side saw Sam Straker break free, round the Rangers’ keeper and score into the empty net.
With the clock ticking down, Wetherby suddenly had to defend as Rangers swept forward looking for some sort of consolation. However, custodian Darren Hooper was equal to what was thrown at him and Wetherby left the pitch with a good 3-0 win under their belts in this local derby.
We would like to wish Kirk Deighton Rangers all the best for the rest of the season, a quality team who will do very well in this league.
