REPORT: Tingley Athletic Reserves Ladies 2 v 4 Wetherby Athletic Ladies
Ladies Storm Through To Supplementary Cup Final!
Wetherby came into the semi-final of the League Supplementary League cup as underdogs, against their league champions and a team that had been undefeated since the start of the season. Tingley Athletic Reserves had already beaten Wetherby once, with Wetherby managing to hold them to a draw at home, but they seemed to be expecting a walkover.
The game saw the welcome return of the 2004/2015 top goalscorer, Debra Slater, who came in to help out the team following a number of absences and injuries at the end of the season, and her impact was immediate.
Tingley took the game to Wetherby from the start, playing attacking and physical football, but it took only 10 minutes for Slater to find the back of the net, after a great ball through from Sarah Holmes. Wetherby capitalised on this advantage quickly, making it 2-0 within 20 minutes after a great run and ball through from Crann once again found Slater who slotted it home.
Wetherby came close a number of times again before the end of the half, hitting the cross bar twice, but Tingley were determined to fight back.
After half-time, Slater took only 5 minutes to bag her hat-trick, after another fantastic ball from Crann found her in space and she calmly took on a defender and passed it past the keeper. Tingley took on a far more aggressive stance from this point, sending a barrage of players up front at every break, and Wetherby did well to contain them. Stand-in keeper Jane Potter also did brilliantly, palming away a number of dangerous corners and coming out quickly to close down players.
Wetherby took their advantage to 4 goals in the 65th minute, when Slater crossed the ball to an unmarked Lucy Crann, who made no mistake in finding the back of the net.
It took only a few minutes for Tingley to start their comeback though, when a long ball caught the Wetherby defence sleeping and their winger managed to find a striker unmarked in the box to smash it home. 4-1.
It didn’t stop there however as Tingley continued to send players forward, and in the 80th minute managed to get another back, bringing it to 4-2.
Wetherby’s game management in these dying minutes was excellent however, as they managed to hold onto the ball more, and keep it out of danger areas as much as they could, and they were rewarded with a well-deserved win and their place in the cup final next week.

Manager Danny Redshaw said: “It was great to see such a battling display at the end of the season against a good team who on paper should have had the better of us. All the girls put 100% in, and they deserve their place in the final next week.”
